Blue Valentine

Jup, Ryan Gosling again. I repeatedly said how much I adore his acting skills, but maybe I have to precise. I don’t think he is particularly good looking, even though his body is like from a Men’s Health Cover, and I’m not a crazy fan. I just think he has this ability to get the biggest effects with just a little effort. Like when you compare his face in the beginning of The Ides of March and in the last scene you can see the development of his character, just by the way his expression changes. I think that’s amazing. Not a lot of actors can do that. One that also has this ability is Leonardo DiCaprio. I also don’t consider him pretty, but maybe that’s the magic this two have in common, that’s what makes them incredibly charming. (And get all the hot Chicks.)

In this movie Ryan gets a lot of freedom to develop his character. The Director Derek Cianfrance chose not to stick to the screenplay but allow his actors to improvise. And he didn’t only allow it; he decided they shouldn’t stick to the screenplay anymore. So he gave them separated directions, as a result they didn’t know what the other one was doing and therefore their acting was quite natural. I love this Idea of doing a movie. You have a total new energy on the screen that is actually felt by the audience!

Once again Gosling has a very strong and good actress on his side, but next to him it seems like every star shines a little bit less. Even though Williams was first on boat of the project and was very dedicated to the movie; he is the one that you feel sympathetic for. His character could have been the one that destroyed everything. He is goofy, unsuccessful and not developing, but he loves. He loves his wife like every girl wants her man to love her.

And that is the magic of this movie. The viewer really wants this to work and feels like Goslings character tries everything for this relationship to survive.

The special energy of this movie is felt in every scene. The moment when they first met (which was actually the first time the two actors met), or the first date seem so realistic. Everyone knows these feelings. But also when they break apart and the end seems inevitable, this feeling of helplessness, as if you are just an observer and not part of the events. These feelings made this movie so great for me. As a divorced child I can totally feel the pain and I was crying a lot watching this move. But I would always do it again. Derek Cianfrance did a remarkable job; writing the screenplay, choosing this splendid actors and directing. I’m a huge fan of his work!
