Adaptation

Yes, Meryl Streep is a great actress and she has every right to get the Oscar for The Iron Lady, but if you want to see her in a great role and in a great Movie check Adaptation! Every Film student loves this Movie and they are right. It has great Actors: Meryl Streep, Nicholas Cage – BAFTA and Oscar Nominated for this Movie, Chris Cooper – actually got the Oscar for this, Tilda Swinton and Maggie Gyllenhaal. One of the best Screenwriters of our time: Charlie Kaufman (the one that brought us great stories like Being John Malkowich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind). And also a great Director: Spike Jonze (also Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind -the Movie that gave Jim Carrey the chance not to be an annoying idiot for the first time- and heaps of great music videos and the really, really good short film I’m Here).

You see, all this already makes Adaptation worth seeing, but I want to give you some more. It is a Movie about making a Movie. Charlie Kaufman wrote the screenplay about how he writes the screenplay. He invented a fictional twin brother Donald that actually got an Oscar nomination! You really have to pay attention to everything said in the Movie because it is all important for the story. That can sound annoying, so maybe you should not watch it when you almost fall asleep already. But if you stay awake and understand what is happening in front of you on the screen you will not regret it :) I love Charlie Kaufman’s comment in the beginning of the Film, when he struggles how to make a worth seeing story out of a book about flowers: “Okay. But, I'm saying, it's like, I don't want to cram in sex or guns or car chases, you know... or characters, you know, learning profound life lessons or growing or coming to like each other or overcoming obstacles to succeed in the end, you know. I mean... The book isn't like that, and life isn't like that. You know, it just isn't. And... I feel very strongly about this.” There are so many books and seminars about how to write a bestselling Movie, but if it is so easy why is there so much fail? Why do we always fail in live? Why can we never feel good about ourselves? Yes- this Movie is also about as essential questions as that! And another really important information coming back to the start of this text: Meryl Streep is taking drugs in this Movie- can you imagine that?!

It is so funny, smart and fresh. I love this movie and I hope you will too!
