A Single Man

I saw a lot of crap movies in the last weeks and I didn’t really find something ‘new’ I want to recommend so I was thinking; which movies did really blow me over in the last years. One of the first I was thinking about was A Single Man. Before I write anything about why I liked it I want to tell you a story:

I watched this movie with my boyfriend. We just started going out since a few weeks and I didn’t really know how he is going to feel about a ‘gay’ movie. Like you know, it is sad, but some straight men feel uncomfortable seeing two guys being together on screen. I was thrilled to hear that he just loved it! When we came out of the theatre he couldn’t find his words and just said; it was so beautiful!

And indeed it is a beautiful movie. You really see that Tom Ford (this is the fashion designers first directory work) is a visual person. The pictures of this movie, the sets, the style and further more Julianne Moore; it is all so good-looking! I think one reason why it is so aesthetic is that it takes part in the late 60es. I just love the chic of this era.

I really like what Tom Ford did with the pictures. There is a blue and a yellow filter on some pictures, depends on their meaning in the movie. I also love the houses that Colin Firth’s character George and Julianne Moore’s character Charley live in. Charley has these stunning Orange trees in her hall. I couldn’t but think that it would be a dream to have a house like that.

The performance of the two main actors is just incredible. It is a shame that the Academy is still not open enough to give an Oscar to the best performance, even if there are some gay scenes in a movie. It was the same with Brokeback Mountain and here with Colin Firth. He got the nomination, but the Oscar had to wait till one year later. I kind of felt when he got it for The King’s Speech it was really a compensation for the year before. Don’t get me wrong, he was great in King’s Speech, but that is because he is just a really good actor. The character of George in A Single Man on the other hand is a role of a lifetime!

It is sad that it has been two years and there is no new film project of Tom Ford coming up. I am really glowing for his work and I hope there is going to be more of it!!! But I guess he has enough to do with being a designer…
